Canopius is the brand name for our insurance business and Sompo Canopius Re is the brand name for our reinsurance business.Canopius was formed via a management buyout in December 2003, with £25 million equity capital. Since then it has achieved significant growth through a mix of organic expansion and acquisition. Canopius is one of the top 10 insurers in the Lloyd's insurance market and across the group wrote in excess of $1.3 billion premium in 2016. The group was bought in 2014 by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc., an A+ rated company and one of the top three Japanese P&C insurers. It is itself the principal subsidiary of Sompo Holdings Inc., which has total assets of close to $100 billion.Sompo Canopius AG is domiciled in Zurich and operates in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Bermuda, US and Singapore.At Lloyd's, Canopius operates through Canopius Managing Agents Limited, which manages a single syndicate (4444) with one other in run off. For 2016, Canopius owns 87% of capacity on Syndicate 4444. The Active Underwriter of Syndicate 4444 is Group Chief Underwriting Officer Mike Duffy.
